Virginian Railway Heritage Trail book
It's here!.
This 90 page book is many things; a guide for studying and traveling to significant, surviving points of interest on the old Virginian railroad, learning heretofore unknown details in a story telling style, discovering the people who worked on the Virginian railroad and relating the past to the Virginian's role in today's Norfolk Southern Railroad. The book is structured around the Virginian Railway Heritage Trail and includes a great amount of previously unknown material and unseen pictures from the private collections of dozens of individuals. The hardback book contains information as well as vintage and contemporary pictures which combine for engaging reading for all fans of the old Virginian and coal railroading in general. Over three dozen locations survive in the 21st century that were essential to the Virginian's success from the early 20th century through its merger with the Norfolk & Western Railway in 1959. They stretch from Norfolk, Virginia on the seacoast, across Virginia and into south-central West Virginia with forays on three branches in Virginia and West Virginia as well as locations in Charleston, West Virginia where VGN's passenger trains called. In addition to the book containing more than 175 pictures plus maps from private collections, complete directions are given for each of the trail's locations. Pictures and information span from the first decade of the 20th century to the second decade of the 21st century.
